What is Walrus (
$WAL )?
Walrus (
$WAL ) is a decentralized storage and data availability protocol built on the
$SUI blockchain, developed by Mysten Labs. It is designed to store and serve large amounts of unstructured data (“blobs”) such as videos, images, NFT media, and AI datasets in a decentralized and censorship-resistant way.
Unlike traditional cloud storage or older blockchain storage solutions, Walrus uses erasure coding (called Red Stuff) instead of simple data replication. Data is split into smaller pieces and distributed across many nodes, allowing files to be reconstructed even if up to two-thirds of the nodes go offline. This makes the network highly resilient and difficult to disrupt.
🔹 What is it used for?
Storage payments: Users pay fees in WAL upload and store data
Staking & security: Validators and node operators stake WAL to secure the network.
Node collateral: Storage providers must lock WAL as collateral and can be slashed for data loss.
Governance: WAL holders vote on protocol upgrades and economic parameters.
Walrus is designed to support AI training data, decentralized websites, NFT storage, gaming assets, and enterprise data, offering a decentralized alternative to centralized cloud providers. Increased usage of Walrus also generates activity on the Sui blockchain, strengthening the broader Sui ecosystem.
