Iran’s Judiciary Chief vowed fast-track trials for suspects arrested over a wave of protests, which the authorities have dismissed as riots, State television said Wednesday (January 14, 2026).
“If a person burned someone, beheaded someone, and set them on fire, then we must do our work quickly,” Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei said on a visit to a prison holding protest detainees, in comments broadcast by State television.
The death toll from a crackdown on protests in Iran jumps to at least 2,571, activists said early Wednesday (January 14, 2026). The activist group said 2,403 of the dead were protesters and 147 were government-affiliated. Twelve children were killed, along with nine civilians, it said, who were not taking part in protests. More than 18,100 people have been detained, the group said.
