It was a cold and terrifying night in October 1917.
An immigrant passenger ship, carrying Italian migrants from Italy to New York, was suddenly caught in a violent storm in the Atlantic Ocean.
Among the passengers was a 28-year-old carpenter, Antonio Russo, traveling with his five-year-old daughter, Maria.
Maria’s mother had died during childbirth five years earlier.
Antonio was taking his daughter to America to escape poverty and give her a better future and a new life.
