IThis hurts to write but maybe it'll save someone else from my mistake.
Had a portfolio of rare NFTs worth about $50K total. Pudgy Penguins some Azukis couple others. Felt rich honestly. Everything on blockchain forever right?
Wrong.
Last month the platform hosting most of my NFT metadata shut down. No warning just gone. Now my "valuable NFTs" are literally broken image links. Blockchain still shows I own them but the actual ART is gone forever.
You know what makes this worse? I KNEW about @Walrus 🦭/acc and $WAL. Friend told me months ago about permanent decentralized storage on Sui. I ignored it thought "nah my NFTs are fine."
$50K lesson learned the hardest way possible.
Walrus uses erasure coding to distribute data across truly decentralized nodes. Your files don't depend on one company staying in business. They're PERMANENT. Even if half the network goes offline your data stays accessible.
And here's the part that makes me sick - it's CHEAPER than the centralized solutions that failed me. I could have saved money AND actually protected my assets.
If you hold valuable NFTs and they're not stored on @Walrus 🦭/acc or similar decentralized solution you're gambling. Maybe your platform stays up maybe it doesn't. Why risk it?
$WAL solved this problem completely. I learned too late. You don't have to.
Check where your NFTs are stored RIGHT NOW. If it's centralized you're one server shutdown away from being me posting this sad story.
Don't be stupid like I was. Protect your assets properly.
